What parish and town councillors do

Councillors are elected to represent the local community, so you must live or work in the parish or town council area. Becoming a councillor is a rewarding experience as you can make a change in your community to help improve residents’ lives. A councillor’s role can include developing strategies and plans for the area, helping with problems and ideas, representing the community, working with other local community groups, making decisions, and talking to the community about their needs and what the council is doing.

Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL)

What is CIL?

CIL is a general levy on all new development, designed to raise funds for infrastructure needed generally as a result of an increase in development in the area. The developer pays CIL to the District Council and a percentage is given to the Parish Council. CIL can then be used to provide or improve infrastructure and to then operate or maintain that infrastructure within a community.

What is Infrastructure?

Infrastructure may be a physical thing such as a building, a playground or a zebra crossing that becomes more necessary as a result of the development. It also could be the provision of a service that might not exist at the moment, such as transport for the elderly or a community cafe. For more information on Cil Funding Click Here

Sulhamstead Parish have CIL money that can be used to support projects in the local area.

Previous community groups that have benefitted from CIL funding are

Burghfield and Sulhamstead Scouts
Ufton Scout group
SUN Cricket Club
WDBC Willink School
SUN Village Hall
Garlands Junior School
SUN School
SUN Village Hall
Royal British Legion

Supporting the local school with Cil funding

Sun School letter head

11 th November 2024

Dear Mrs Poole

On behalf of the Teachers, Governors, Parents and all the wonderful children here at SUN School, we want to off er our heartf elt thanks for your very generous and kind donati on. This off ering has been instrumental in the repair and resurfacing of the roof over our main school building.

While this may sound slightly mundane and unexciti ng, it is absolutely crucial for all our children to learn in an environment where they feel secure and safe (and not having water leaking into several of our rooms when it rains defi nitely plays a key role in this!!). Our ability to take on major projects is impossible without funding such as you have provided, and for this we are eternally grateful.

At SUN school we are passionate in playing a strong role in our community (only recently we established a mini food bank in our recepti on), and have ever increasing ambiti ons to create a sustainable, positi ve future in which our young children can dream big, believe in and challenge themselves and others and realise all they want to achieve. Through your kind donati on, you have helped bring our ambiti ons to life.

Thank you once again.

Kind Regards

Steve Martin and Melissa Whitaker
Chair of Governors and Head Teacher
